Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

There seems to be an enormous amount of confusion in the media and among our patients about what bioidentical hormones are. The term “bioidentical hormone” has become synonymous with anything that is not a synthetically produced hormone.  Plants in nature produce look - alike molecules that are normally produced by our human bodies. Therefore, these natural or bioidentical hormones are extracted in laboratories from current molecules or compounds that are contained in plants such as soy beans or yams.  These plants molecules may act or look like the chemical structures that are present naturally in the human body.

Because these structures are so close to the hormones produced by our bodies, the assumption is that when they are taken in, the body recognizes them its own.  The body sees these bioidentical hormones as indistinguishable from the hormones made from its own glands such as ovaries or testicles. The non bio identical preparations (including does made from horse his urine) have an alteration to the naturally occurring hormone and  that may be the reason for the unwanted side effects experienced when the non-bioidentical hormones made by the pharmaceutical companies.

Conditions such as Crohn's disease Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Fibromyalgia may also be treated with dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).  Oxytocin is recently been found to be a neuro-hormonal entity that, if deficient, can interfere with the female orgasmic process.
