Liposuction is a popular procedure among both men and women.  According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction was the most performed procedure in 2006. Millions of people have felt the benefits of removing those last few stubborn pounds of fat.
After liposuction you can fit back into that favorite pair of jeans and feel beach ready for that new bikini you’ve been dreaming of. 

Liposuction is the process of removing fat from unwanted areas of the body. It is performed using a hollow tube assisted by a powerful vacuum.  Fat deposits are removed from beneath the skin.

Most often, liposuction is used to remove fat from the abdomen, love handles, and outer thighs.  Other popular problem areas are the neck, back, buttocks, inner thighs, and chin.

Liposuction can be performed under general anesthesia or with a local anesthesia called tumescent anesthesia. Tumescent anesthesia allows a patient to be awake and interact with the doctor. Local anesthesia has the added benefit of longevity. It will last long enough to work as a pain killer after the patient has returned home. Local or tumescent anesthesia is safer than general anesthesia.

Recovery time from liposuction can be anywhere from days to weeks depending on how much fat you have had removed. Pain is typically treated with over the counter pain relievers such as Tylenol.

Results can be seen immediately after swelling subsides. This can take up to two weeks or more. A compression garment will be worn after liposuction for anywhere from two weeks to one month. The garment will help shape the body after fat has been removed.

A small amount of pain and bruising should be expected. This is usually minimal and will subside anywhere from 2 days to two weeks after your proceure.

Care should be taken to make sure too much fat is not removed at one time. Removing too much fat in one procedure can cause a lumpy appearance under the skin.  Additional procedures can be done if more fat needs to be removed.
